What is the point of using a cover crop in your garden during the fall and the winter?

September 18th, 2011

If you are not planning on doing a fall garden, sowing cover crop seeds  is an excellent way to add nutrients to your spring garden beds in the  fall and winter. You can use seeds for plants such as annual rye grass,  which will keep your soil nice and aerated; and red clover, which will  help to replace the nitrogen in your soil that had been depleted by the  crops you had in garden beds during the previous spring and summer  season.Cover crops will grow all winter long with very little or no  care.Prior to plantingearly spring crops, till all of the cover crop  into the garden beds. Do this about a month before you plan to start  your seedlings. This will inject the beds with nice, rich, green,  composted organic matter and give it enough time to break down so your  little early spring crop babies can use it.

When is the best season to plant?

September 18th, 2011

The fall is the best time to plant. More than just cold weather crops can  be planted this time of year. If someone were planning on planting some  berry bushes or fruit trees, fall would be the time to do it. We usually  get a lot of nice rain in the winter, and with the cooler temperatures  in the fall, it helps tremendously with the watering of freshly  transplanted shrubs and trees. You might want to go ahead and put in your  berry bushes, such as blueberries and raspberries, as well as any fruit  trees like apples, pears, plums, and peaches.  The fall is an excellent  time to get them in the ground. Keep in mind that the plant is about to  go into a dormant state. The root structure will still grow all winter  long, giving you a nice head start in the spring.
