In the springtime, Bradley Kountry Acres is a Pick-Your-Own strawberry farm. The Portland, Tennessee family farm began life as a Grade A dairy farm, but in 1996, after more than 30 years of milking cows, the couple made the difficult decision to sell their cows and move on to other farm endeavors. The first operation was a crop of pick-your-own strawberries, then a greenhouse was added for bedding plants. Over the past decade, the Bradley's have added two additional greenhouses and increased the strawberry crop to five acres. They now grow a summer crop of blackberries, peaches, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and peppers. They've even extended their season to include a fall crop of mums, ornamental gourds, and pumpkins.
Bradley Kountry Acres opens for strawberry picking in mid-April and stays open until mid-June, depending on the weather and the success of the year's crop. Four strawberry varieties are grown to expand the picking season and include Sweet Charlie, Chandler, Darselect, and Earliglow. All of these varieties are good for fresh eating and freezing.
The season kicks off every year with a Spring Open House on the first Sunday in May. Customers are invited to visit the greenhouses and the pick-your-own strawberry patches and enjoy an afternoon of family fun at the farm. Guests are encouraged to bring a copy of their favorite strawberry recipe to share and sample the recipes from previous years on their refreshment tables. It's a great way to get inspired to make all things strawberry!
